Diagnostic Department

The Hellenic Pasteur Institute (HPI) has been making a substantial contribution to the field of Public Health for more than 100 years. The Diagnostic Department of HPI contributes daily to the protection and improvement of Public Health through the timely and reliable diagnosis, surveillance, and assessment of serious autoimmune, neurological, and infectious diseases.

The Diagnostic Department consists of four diagnostic platforms:
a) Molecular Biology,
b) Immunology of Autoimmune and Neurological Diseases,
c) Immunology of Infectious Diseases, and
d) Cell Culture/Biosafety Level 3 Laboratory.

It should also be noted that, under the supervision of the Diagnostic Department, the following National Reference Laboratories operate:
i) National Influenza Reference Laboratory for Southern Greece,
ii) National Measles and Rubella Reference Laboratory, and
iii) National Poliovirus/Enterovirus Reference Laboratory.

All of the above laboratories are accredited and recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Diagnostic Department is accredited by the Hellenic Accreditation System (ESYD), ensuring its international recognition. The laboratory participates annually in External Quality Assessment (EQA) schemes organized by internationally recognized bodies (QCMD, UK NEQAS, SHAPYPRO) in order to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results while promoting the continuous improvement of its services.

In accordance with the requirements of ISO 15189:2022, ISO/IEC 17025:2017, and ISO 9001:2015 standards, the Department ensures that its services fully meet the needs of patients, clients, and collaborators, while reinforcing the commitment of its personnel to continuous development and the provision of high-level scientific services, as reflected in its Quality Policy and Impartiality Policy.

In the following section, you will find general information regarding the operation and infrastructure of the Diagnostic Department, its specialized personnel, as well as information about the diagnostic tests performed. In addition, information on all research activities carried out within the laboratory is provided.
